Like Sweden's Soilwork Omnium Gatherum`s brand of melodic death metal veers well into prog rock territory to such an extent that they sound at times like somebody has dug out an old Van Der Graaf Generator album and stuck it on at 45. We have overwrought throat courtesy of one Antti Filppu, who sounds like he is singing something so mind blowingly heavy that it is literally ripping him apart inside to get it out. We have 900mph technoflash guitar courtesy of Harri Pikka interspersed with flanged acoustic passages. We have a song about renaissance cosmologist and heretic Giordano Bruno rather that the usual Norse pagan "satan eateth my shorts" bollocks. This is a good thing: a five track taster for a full-length album "Spirits and august Light" which will be released next year and which will be worth the wait.

Ancient Ceremonies

There aren't that many bands coming out from the underground scene that we can clearly say that it's going to be a success. I think that is somehow fair to the Metal scene itself, can you imagine if every band would possess the means to become huge? We would be drowning in bands, I mean, quality bands! But from time to time we get a work from a particular band that we can point out as a "leader". I can't say that Omnium Gatherum are originals in what they are making but just the fact that they come out from nowhere and provide us a tremendous good Mcd without any warning is something to praise about! These sextet, coming from the icy lands of Finland provide us a mixture of Death Metal with classical Metal intermingled with strong guitar melodies and some keyboard passages. All in all a formula that during the years has always provided its fruits... Children Of Bodom, In Flames, Amorphis and the list goes on and on!! "Steal The Light" however for the fans of the band is probably not a worthy release since is basically their 2001 demo "Wastrel" re-recorded, but for the rest of the Metal fans this is clearly a testimony of something big to come! Keep an eye on them!

Mir persönlich ist aufgefallen, dass ich noch nie ein wirklich schlechtes Album aus Finnland gehört habe. Wenn ich alle guten finnischen Bands aufzählen wollte, würde ich sogar morgen noch hier sitzen. Und auch OMNIUM GATHERUM machen da keine Ausnahme. In Finnland scheint es sich herumgesprochen haben, dass man ein Album erst dann aufnimmt, wenn man wirklich sicher ist, dass man dazu auch wikrlich in der Lage ist. Und so wird auf „Steal the Light“ melodischer Todesblei serviert, garniert mit vielen Old School Heavy Metal Riffs und reichlich, gut eingeflochtenen, Keyboards.
Enthalten sind fünf Songs, da die Mini-Cd in der Newcomer Aktion vom Label Rage of Achilles released wird. Somit wird sie zum Preis einer Single erhältlich sein. Wer also nicht zuschlägt, ist selber schuld. Allein der Song „Son`s Thoughts“ wäre dieses Geld wert - einfach anhören, ihr kauft die CD dann so oder so. Dies soll aber die anderen vier Songs nicht herabwürdigen, den einen Ausfall kann man nicht vermelden. Also greift dieses Schmankerl ab, und wartet dann auf das erste Full Length Album der Band, welches nächstes Jahr erscheint. Das die Band ihr Album dann auch noch Chuck Schuldinger widmet, gibt einen zusätzlichen Sympathie Bonus.

So kann man beim Konsumenten bereits punkten, bevor er die Musik zu Ohren bekommt, das Coverartwork von "Omnium Gatherum" hat mir nämlich schon von vornherein extrem gut gefallen. Um so gespannter war ich infolgedessen auf den Inhalt, den der Silberling in sich barg. Aufgrund des doch recht melancholischen, geheimnisvollen Charakters der optischen Hülle von "Steal The Light" habe ich eine getragene Dark Metal Scheibe erwartet. Um so überraschter war ich, als mir nach Betätigen der Playtaste melodischer Death Metal im Stile diverser Schwedenbands gen Ohren schallte. Man kann definitiv Ähnlichkeiten zu neuen Soilwork und vor allem auch älteren In Flames ausmachen. Hie und da sickert auch mal eine Ähnlichkeit zu ihren finnischen Landsmännern Children Of Bodom durch. Dennoch klingt das Material trotz offensichtlicher musikalischer Verwandtschaften nie billig und einfallslos abgekupfert, durchgehend weiss das melodische Material wirklich zu begeistern. Markus Vanhala verwöhnt einen mit etlichen wunderschönen Gitarrenmelodien und streut des öfteren auch mal ein paar gekonnte Gitarrensoli in die Kompositionen ein, Drummer Jarmo Pikka schafft die rhythmische Basis für das meist im Midtempo gehaltene Material und Mikko Pennanen legt grundsätzlich einen unauffälligen, aber sehr effizienten Keyboardteppich unter das hervorragende Liedgut. Vor allem letzteres ist erwähnenswert, denn das Keyboard klingt nie so penetrant dominant wie es z.B bei. Children Of Bodom der Fall ist, sondern reiht sich meist unaufdringlich in den Hintergrund. Wegzudenken ist es aber auch nicht, und wird somit in genau den Proportionen eingesetzt, wie ich es liebe. Es erwartet einen also sehr melodisches, ungemein atmosphärisches und sehr gut produziertes Songmaterial, an dem ich eigentlich nichts auszusetzen weiss. Die fünf Songs sind allesamt sehr ordentlich ausgefallen, als Anspieltipp würde ich vielleicht "Son's Thoughts" oder das schnellere "Candles For Ghordano Bruno" empfehlen. In Anbetracht der Tatsache, dass diese Mini zum Single-Preis in die Läden kommt, gibt es aber eigentlich keinen Grund, diese Scheibe nicht blind zu kaufen, Freunde von oben genannten Bands können hierbei jedenfalls nichts falsch machen. Die zwei Punkte nach oben behalte ich mir lediglich für das Anfang 2003 erscheinende Full Length vor... (mf_Greg / 21.11.2002)

It seems Finland is shifting from producing Children of Bodom wannabees to churning put oppressive Goth rock as of late - except for Omnium Gatherum. They have produced an enjoyable little piece of melodic/blackish death metal on the normally anarchistic Rage of Achilles label. Omnium Gatherum mix some obvious Children of Bodom bubblegum black metal with a little more death metal edge. With a big dedication to Chuck Schuldiner inside the cover, there's no surprise that a lot of the guitar work is typical Finnish harmonies mixed with a little Death. The overall sound isn't too far from much of the stuff you'll will hear on Spinefarm, and also reminded me a lot of a album I recently reviewed by Oceans of Sadness, but with a little more polish, especially in the songwriting department. Steal the Light is only a five song EP, but it gives enough of a taste to be excited about any future efforts from the band. Where Omnium Gatherum might break away from the pack of Finnish melodic black/metal is their songwriting ability. While it appears everyone in Finland is born a guitar virtuoso, Omnuim Gatherum actually put this talent to a far more memorable effect. A couple of Omnium Gatherum's songs stuck in my head long after the initial listen. However, they never quite step over into total guitar wankery and self-indulgent overly busy twiddle-fests. The chunky riff of "Sons Thoughts", was a particular highlight that was emotive, catchy, yet strangely heavy. It also has enough time changes (including a fairly light, yet impressive blastbeat towards the end) and "wind in the hair" solo work, to make Alexi Laihlo fans take note. Markus Vanhala and Harri Pikka meld some beautiful melodies together straddling both the artistic and the evocative; again, though, it's the songwriting that allows the two guitarists to display their skills. The closing two minutes of "Lost and Found" is as rich and rewarding as any other guitar work you'll will hear. Drummer Jarma Pikka has a far more rock-orientated approach, which gives the music a far more accessible backbone. However, the other members don't quite reach the same levels as these guys. Vocalist Antti Filippu is monotone and lacks any kind of emotion in his voice; his raspy shout is the sole vocal delivery, which is a shame as music as varied and expert as this just cries for a dominating personality to carry the music that much further, with either a clean vocal break or... just something different - anything. His lyrics too could use a little work: "And here's enough of them for many an nightly breath/and a fine shelter from the jealous too/the rise of an extinguished art/ higher dreams have come/to us/and here's enough of them/ the depressive season there with scenaries filled with idols/hell the space is no more". (from "Ammo". Yes, "Ammo"). The other small blemish for Omnium Gatherum is the synth work. Personally, I think the songs carry enough weight to not need the very amateurish keyboards of Mikko Pennanen. They don't really add to the already decent song structures or guitar work, and seem forced and ultimately are be responsible for more deserved cries if CoB worship. Other than a nice keyboard break down of sorts during the final minute of "Ammo", they vary little from '80s pop music. Production-wise, the sound is refreshing change from the deep Spinefarm/Tico-Tico sound, and sounds distinct but not cloned. Overall, Steal the Light is a decent little taster for things to come from yet another talented Finnish metal act. Omnium Gatherum's definitely one to keep an eye on.

”outrageous” may well be the keyword here. Finnish crew Omnium Gatherum have effortlessly upped the ante on that distinctly Wacken-flavoured brand of NewWaveOfSwedishDeathMetal in such a ”Ha! Beat that!” manner that it`s hard not to imaginemany of the rest of this vastly over-subscribed genre tearing their long blonde manes out in despair. A relentless cavalcade of stirring harmonies, speedy though never wanky guitar histrionics, unobtrusive keyboards and melodramatic,sandpapery vocals, this mini-album is where ”Seventh Son” era Maiden takes an entire packet of Pro-Plus down the front at a death metal show and loses it`s mind. So much is crammed into every tune that the overall effect is bewildering yet exhilarating, and one can only hope the forthcoming full-lengther doesn`t provoke mass- ”scanners” style action amongst those dangerous souls with more than one item of Iron Maiden merchandise at once.

Symphonic death metal from the alcoholic epicentre of Europe.
Following in the footsteps of fellow Finns Children of Bodom, Omnium Gatherum are energetically flying the flag for all things melodic, deathly and technically extravagant. No wonder that Rage Of Achilles snapped these boys up; "Steal the Light" is as convincing and musically strong as anything the European extreme metal scene has to offer, and the band will surely be topping the bill at mullet-friendly, outdoor festivals within the next 12 months.
Over the five exceptional tracks here, Omnium Gatherum ably prove their worth as both musicians and songwriters, without ever disappearing up their chain mail-clad, collective backside. If this is a true taste of things to come, we can only raise our bloodstained swords aloft and roar, viking-like, in anticipation of the bands full-length debut. Possibly.

The EP "Steal The Light" from Omnium Gatherum was send to me a little whileago. After a few unsuccessful attempts to pronounce the name I decided to dig up some info about this band first. Omnium Gatherum is a Finish band that has been around since 1996. Until nowthey've released a couple of demos and 3 EPs.On "Steal The Light" this six men strong band plays Death Metal with adefinite progressive edge.Razor-sharp Death Metal riffs with a couple of really nice guitar twins and perfectly balanced keyboard parts were the things I noticed right away aboutthis EP. The band houses some Children of Bodom influences, but definitelyhas its own style. Maiden also heavily influenced the band, which is notsomething to be ashamed of and certainly sounds very much ok. On certainparts you think you're listening to Symphony X as some parts are quitecomplex. However it's never to complex and on a whole sounds pretty good.Singer Antti Filppu puts some nice raw vocals on this album and sometimesreminds me a bit of the old Tiamat of some years back. The first song"Wastrel" is a nice upbeat song that immediately sticks in your mind causeit has a catchy guitar riff. The guitar players Markus Vanhala and HarriPikka really know how to play and manage to convince me of that again andagain with some great twins like on the song "Ammo". The solos on this albumare of a pretty high standard as well and they are well dosed in the songs. The keyboard parts of Mikka Pennanen are truly great…from atmospheric partson the background of the songs till bombastic church organ like parts as inthe song " Candles for Giordano Bruno". But good musicians won't do you muchgood if they can't play together as a band. These six Fins prove that theycan do that on this CD and on the song "lost and Found " they show just howgood Omnium Gatherum can sound on what is for me the best song of this EP."Lost and Found" builds up well until it ends in an almost orchestralending…..truly a great song!!It looks that in addition to snow, reindeer, sauna, Mikka Hakkinen andChildren of Bodom Finland has a lot more to offer. This is certainly truefor their metal scene and with Omnium Gatherum it has once again proven tothe world what quality bands exist in the cold north. Omnium Gatherum havecertainly made an impression with "Steal the Light" which will probably bereceived well. The band is currently working on a full length album whichwill hopefully find its way to my doorstep through our highly acclaimedchief editor. This EP is a must for fans of melodic Death Metal.

Although they have been around since 1996 this is OMNIUM GATHERUM´s debut MCD, they´ve released some demos but only since recently they are signed to Rage Of Achilles Records.
And it was about time they got signed! On this Mini-CD OMNIUM GATHERUM shows us their talent for creating energetic and fast melodic Göthenburg, or melodic death mixed with heavy metal in other words. This MCD is actually their last promo which got remixed and remastered. Since they play Göthenburg sounds they remind of lot of great bands in that genre, (old) DARK TRANQUILLITY, IN FLAMES, a bit of AT THE GATES, ARCH ENEMY and vocals mostly resemble (old) NIGHT IN GALES and ARCH ENEMY. But they bring their own twist to this style of music, by mixing in fantastic guitar riffing and pounding drums. I myself am very curious to hear their debut full-length CD, which will follow in early 2003.
If you like IN FLAMES, ARCH ENEMY, or any of the above mentioned bands, hell if you like great metal check out this band! It certainly is one of my favourite releases of this year!

Kotkalainen Omnium Gatherum tarjoilee mini-cd:n muodossa esimakua tulevasta: pienehkölle englantilaisfirmalle levyttävä yhtye saa näes Spirits And August Light -täyspitkänsä pihalle keväällä. Tämä viiden biisin noin 25 minuuttinen pläjäys tarjoilee mielekkään kuuloista ja hyvin melodioin sävytettyä death-metallia. Bändin kiinnostava melodisuus heijastaa paikoin brittibändeille tyypillistä tragedista suuntausta, jota esimerkiksi Anathema parhaimmillaan edustaa. Omnium Gatherum ei kuitenkaan kuulsta lainkaan brittiläiseltä, vaan on poiminut soppaansa hyviä aineksia muualtakin, lisäten myös omat mausteensa. Soittopuoli on todella maukkaan kuuloista ja Nino Laurenne on saanut soundeistakin nautittavan tasapainoiset. Kitarat elävät ja soivat soittajien raastaessa niitä. Laulupuolikin toimii, vaikka eniten petraamista löytyykin juuri sillä saralla. Lievä monotonisuus voi häiritä pidemmällä julkaisulla. Joka tapauksessa Steal the Light huokuu hyvin toteutettua ja monimuotoista musiikkia. Sen tahtiin voi tehdä melkein mitä vain.

Omnium Gatherum: Steal The Light (Rage of Achilles)
Kyminlinnasta(!?) tuleva Omnium Gatherum pistää viiden biisin edestä teknistä metalliaan, jota ryydittää death metal -henkiset, karjutut vokaalit. Kitaroista irtoaa mehevää melodiaa ja tikkiä tilulilua vähän joka väliin, tuplabasarit polkevat tarvittaessa oikein vihaisesti ja pääosin taustalla pysyttelevät koskettimet antavat vielä oman melodisen lisänsä. Bändin vahvuus tiukan soittopuolen ohella onkin monipuoliset ja toimivat melodiat.
Näin suomalaisen metallinkuuntelijan korvaan Omnium Gatherum kärsii vähän omaperäisyyden puutteesta. Paikoin mieleen väkisinkin nousee Throne of Chaos Menace and Prayer -levyllään. Sävellys- ja sovituspuolella oltaisiin ehkä kaivattu pientä riskinottoa, jolloin materiaaliin oltaisiin saatu enemmän yllätyksellisyyttä ja tiettyä tuoreutta. Nyt biisit kyllä toimivat ja osat loksahtavat yhteen, mutta se yksityiskohta, joka tekee bändistä Omnium Gatherumin on vielä vähän hakusessa. Lauluun kaipaisi myös vähän monipuolisuutta, sillä se kyllä potkii, mutta on aika yksipuolista.
Steal The Light on oikein asiallinen ensijulkaisuksi ja muutenkin vahva näyttö bändin kyvyistä, erityisesti soitinten kimpussa. Jos kehitys jatkuu ja omaleimaisuus löytyy, on ensi vuonna tulevalta täyspitkältä lupa odottaa paljon. Ja levyn odotteluun Steal The Light on mainio soundtrack.

Kotkalaisen Omnium Gatherumin levy sisältää melodista metallia, jota voisi vertailla Kalmahiin tai Throne Of Chaosin Menace and Prayeriin. Kiekko sisältää viisi kappaletta rivakkaa mäiskettä rääkylaululla raakuttuna ja meno kuin luotijunalla kiitämistä. Biisit kulkevat hyvin eteenpäin toimivien ja melodioita pursuavien riffien kyydittämänä samalla kun syntikkamelodiat helmeilevät taustalla. Joka tapauksessa Omnium Gatherumin biisit potkivat persuketta ja yhteensoitto toimii kuin veitsi sulaan voihin. Vaikka samankaltaista melodista metallia soittavia bändejä onkin runsaasti, ei Omnium Gatherumia kannata missata varsinkaan niiden, jotka diggailevat melodista metallia. Hankkikaa itsellenne Steal the Light, tai laittakaa edes bändin nimi muistiin.

Ollaanpa kerrankin rehellisiä: melodinen deathmetal on tylsä musiikkityyli, ja suurin osa genren edustajista voisi lopettaa soittamisen ilman että kovinkaan suuria valitushuutoja kuuluisi yhtään mistään. Tuplanopeudella ja örinälaululla esitetty ironmaideni oli kiinnostavaa joskus In Flamesin ja Dark Tranquillityn ensilevytysten aikoihin, kukaan ei ole vain vaivautunut viemään tyyliä eteenpäin.
Tämän kaiken huomioon ottaen kotimaisen OMNIUM GATHERUMin viiden biisin mini-CD on varsin ansiokas saavutus. Steal the Light osoittaa että melodeathin alueella voi vieläkin tehdä jotain tuoretta, jos mielikuvitusta piisaa. Kitaristien tietous eri efekteistä ei tunnu rajoittuvan pelkkään säröpedaaliin, melodiat ovat tasokkaita ja sanoituksetkin tuntuvat poikkeavan tavanomaisesta, löytyypä levyltä jopa legendaarisesta renesanssimystikosta Giordano Brunosta kertova biisi.
Levyn ainoa isompi heikkous on sen kyhyt kesto; Steal the Lightista on toki alkupaloiksi, mutta tällaista materiaalia tahtoisi päästä nauttimaan täyden kattauksen. Eli tämän näytön perusteella yhtyeen ensi vuodelle lupailtua kokopitkää odottelee vähintäänkin kiinnostuneena. (Tapio Ahola) 7/10

Mit den enorm enthusiastisch musizierenden Finnen Omnium Gatherum etabliert sich ein weiterer hellleuchtender, ja fast schon blendender Stern am weitreichenden Musikfirmament des Melodic Black Metal. "Steal The Light" ist die wirklich mitreißend instrumentierte Debüt-MCD des unglaublich talentierten Sextetts aus dem Städtchen Kyminlinaa, welches hier gleich mal einen dermaßen gelungenen Erstling hinlegt, dass einem minutenlang die Spucke wegbleibt. Die so entstandene Mundtrockenheit ist von kurzer Dauer: Denn die aufgrund des auf "Steal The Light" enthaltenen gigantisch guten Songmaterials nachfolgend einsetzende Gier auf diese Prachtband geht mit aufgestellten Ohren, weitaufgerissenen Augen und unaufhaltbarem Speichelfluss einher, der einem den unstillbaren Geifer der besessenen Klanggeilheit aus den bebenden Lefzen triefen lässt. Muss ich noch mehr schwärmen? Ich glaube nicht - hol dir das Teil besser heute als morgen! Und sehr, sehr schnell wirst du dir ergriffen bewusst sein, dass nach superben finnischen Ausnahmetruppen wie Catamenia, Arrival, Count de Nocte, Throes Of Dawn, Funeris Nocturnum, Horna, Algazanth, Faerghail, Thyrane und Thy Serpent nun auch mit Omnium Gatherum eine weitere betörend geile und erfreulich hochmelodisch agierende Schwarzstahlband aus diesem wunderschönen Land an den Start geht. "Steal The Light", dieser ebenso mit begeisternd orgiastischer Spiellaune inszenierte wie niveauvoll instrumentalisierte Five-Tracker, diese stockdunkle Genreperle, kann aufgrund hochfiligran ausgearbeiteter und trotzdem enorm bewegungsfreudiger Riffs, über die Ohren hinwegpreschendem, ekstatisch umgesetztem Powerdrumming und erhaben verachtend intoniertem Gesang vollkommen überzeugen. Opulent gespielte Keyboardsymphonien sind hier selbstverständlich auch dabei.

Schwer zu merken ist der Name dieses finnischen Fünfers. Umso einprägsamer ist dafür ihr technischer, filigraner Melodic Death in bester Children Of Bodom Manier, der mit massenweise Hooklines verziert ist. Es fehlen nur die halsbrecherischen Soloduelle zwischen Leadgitarre und Keyboard, wie man es vom Duo Laiho/Warmen kennt, doch dafür gibt es genügend duellierende Gitarrenläufe, die nicht minder filigran ausgefallen sind. Keyboards spielen bei Omnium Gatherum eine mindere Rolle, doch tragen sie im Hintergrund zum Klangbild und zur Atmosphäre bei. "Steal The Light" ist der Titel ihrer 5-Track-EP, die dank dem englischen Label Rage Of Achilles nun in den Läden steht. Allerdings sind die Finnen nicht nur technisch extrem stark, sondern haben auch fünf richtig gute Songs zu bieten. "Ammo" beispielsweise hätte ohne Probleme auf C.O.B.'s "Something Wild" stehen können. Doch wer vermutet, es hier mit einem weiteren Children Of Bodom / In Flames Klon zu tun zu haben, der irrt gewaltig, denn Omnium Gatherum sind eine sehr eigenständige Melodic Death Combo. "Son's Thoughts" ist ein herausragendes Stück, bei dem Vergleiche mit anderen Bands alles andere als angebracht sind. Die Songs sind mit waghalsigen Gitarrenstrukturen, maiden-lastigen Harmonien, galoppierenden Rhythmen und Double-Bass Gewitter versehen, darüber legt Antti Filppu seine tiefen Vocals. Er ist ein sehr typischer Death Growler. "Steal The Light" ist verhältnismäßig düster ausgefallen und geizt nicht mit Elementen aus dem Gothic und Black Metal Bereich. Es ist ein sehr vielversprechender Einstand, der Melodic Death Metal Fans richtig gut gefallen dürfte. Denn außer der nicht ganz perfekten Produktion gibt es an dieser EP rein gar nichts auszusetzen. Im Rahmen einer Newcomer-Kampagne von Rage of Achilles wird "Steal The Light" zum Single Preis in die Läden kommen - also ein weiterer Kaufanreiz.

It is not so easy to notice the name of these Finnish Fifths.But instead of this the technical and filigree Melodic Death in bester Children of Bodom Manier which is decorated with Hooklines is easy to remember.There are only missing the break necking solo-duels between the leading-guitar and Keyboard as we know from Duo Laiho/Warmen, but instead of this there are enough duels of guitar-runs which are not less filigree. At Omnium Gatherum Keyboards do play a less part but in the background they contribute to the sound and atmosphere."Steal The Light" is the title of their 5 -Track-EP which is thanks to the English Label Rage of Achilles in the shops now. Certainly, the Finns are not only extreme strong in terms of technique but they offer five very good songs."Ammo" for example could bee in the C.O.B.`s "Something Wild" without any problems. But if there is one who thinks that this is a further Children Of Bodom / In Flames Klon, he is absolutely wrong because Omnium Gatherum are a very independent Melodic Death Combo."Son's Thoughts" is an outstanding song and comparison with other bands are not at all justified.The songs are provided with daring guitar-structures having a tendency to feminine harmonies, with galloping rhythm and with the thunderstorm of double-Bass andover all Antti Flippu gives his low vocals. He is an very typical Death Growler."Steal The Light" is relatively gloomy and do not stingy with elements of Gothic and Black Metal area. It is an very promising footing which probably will please the fans of Melodic Death.Besides the not 100 % perfect production absolutely nothing can be criticized of this EP.In the course of a campaign for newcomer of Rage of Achilles, the"Steal The Light" will be in the shops at a single-price - a further attraction to buy.

Omnium Gatherum sind eine noch recht Junge band aus Kyminlinaa (Finnland) und servieren uns mit Ihrem Debut "Steal The Light" eine nette Mischung aus Melodischen Death alá in Flames, einer Prise Black Metal (aber nur leicht) und einem Schuss Power Metal. Ich muss sagen, dass die Mischung ganz gut kommt. Zudem muss ich auch wieder erwähnen, dass es schon fast unheimlich ist, wie viele gute Musiker sich in Skandinavien rumtreiben. Die 6 Jungs von Omnium Gatherum brauchen sich hinter keine Szenegröße zu verstecken und werden mit Ihrem Talent sicher noch des Öfteren von sich hören lassen. So erwartet uns im Frühjahr dann das Full Length der Finnen. Ich für meinen Teil bin wirklich gespannt und kann diese CD jedem der Metal mag ans Herz legen. Zumal die CD, dank einer Newcomer Aktion von Rage Of Achilles, zum Preis einer Single zu haben sein wird. Definitiv antesten! 8/10

What a strange name for a band! OMNIUM GATHERUM from Finland are coming up with some fairly unique sounding death metal. Being excellent musicians and skilled songwriters they`re less influenced by MAIDEN than most of the other bands in this particular genre. Track 2 "Son`s Thoughts", reminds me a little of DREAM THEATER without those annyings ego-trips, though. OG avoid the traps most of todays melodic DM bands fail to recognize. Consequently, these guys must not be labelled as being IN FLAMES copycats under any circumstances! I hope their upcoming debut album (scheduledfor early 2003) holds the same high level. Until then: get this minicd as it will be sold for the price of a single, just like the mcd of their label mates FOREST OF SHADOWS! Out on the 28th of October 2002

Born in '96, Finnish band Omnium Gatherum finally managed to gain a contract with the more and more interesting English label Rage Of Achilles. "Steal The Light" is a reprint of the 2001 mini-cd "Wastrel", the five tracks of which were re-recorded for the occasion at Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki. This sextet clearly owes their fellows Children Of Bodom a debt, especially concerning keyboards, which always lay in the foreground. Apart from this resemblance, Omnium Gatherum manage to result quite original, giving a strong prog imprint to certain parts, like the initial "Wastrel" or "Ammo". "Steal The Light" shines of an epic but not kitsch aura. It is a very good work, well played, although - this the only fault - a bit cold: however, Omnium Gatherum have all the papers in order to produce a good full length. 7/10

It is catchy and easy digestible this record and that way a work like "Steal The Light" - first mini-ep of this finnish band - could be liquidated. The proposed sound moves on already well tested railways, expecially up there in the cold north, that is a melodic heavy/death (very melodic...perhaps too much) of strong maiden influence. A more accurated listening reveals shades which have difficulty in emerging but which are there and they're not little thing. First of all, an epic pathos, which never falls in the gaudy (remarked by the keys textures, perhaps too much on the surface), gives thickness to the songs without releiving the complexive impact...it's something in an age where they insist to claim Rhapsody as a metal band. Furthermore, a particular praise goes to the production, clean, cold, as it must be, but able to exhalt all the instruments in an excellent way. But it's not gold all that shines. It seems that Omnium Gatherum don't want to come out from some stale cliches and styles and unfortunately that drastically mines the complessive opinion of the record. Well: how much is needed a band like this? "Wastrel" could be the most auto-explicative example of the deja-vu impression which permeates all the songs in "Steal Of Light": perfectly played, produced in a professional way, giant melodies and all the rest but - sadly - there's nothing that has never been listened in the swedish field yet (InFlames and Dark Tranquillity above all, but some other power acts from the north could be recalled). Sometimes it seems that the band decides to risk something more, but inevitabily they return to the reassuringly (but boring) way, as it happens in "Son's Thoughts". On the other hand, all runs (too much) smooth as oil, without praise or fame. A meagre consolation, i'd say...

Tämä on tähtihetki. Allekirjoittanut kävelee levypuotiin, kysyy em. äänitettä, saa sen käteensä, maksaa ja saa kuitin. Kaikki tapahtuu virallisesti. Mahtavaa! Hetki jota olen odottanut oikeastaan
jo neljä vuotta, koko sen ajan kun olen OG:n toimintaa seuraillut. Siis hetki, jolloin kädessä ei enää ole omakustanne, vaan oikean levy-yhtiön oikeasti julkaisema äänite. Hetki, jolloin vihdoin voin vilpitömin mielin todeta: jo oli aikakin!
Kaikki siis alkoi joskus Herran vuonna 1998 ollessamme ystäväni Osku Kirin kanssa asentamassa perusmuurilevyä Korelan residenssimme sokkeliin. Vääntelimme levyä paikoilleen n. 2 metriä syvässä kaivannossa. Siis optimipaikka musiikillisille pohdinnoille ja keskusteluille. Keskustelu jotenkin kääntyy Oskun velipoika Villeen. Kysäisen Oskulta, että "Mitä se Ville puuhaa?" "Sillon joku heviviritelmä jossa se koluaa kannuja", vastaa Osku. "Ai minkähän niminen?", kysyn minä. "Joku Omnipotenssi vai mikä se nyt oli, en muista." "Vai Omnipotenssi?", tuumaan itsekseni. "Omnipotenssi" jää mieleeni pyörimään, onhan se kuulemma heviä, joka kiinnostaa allekirjoit-tanutta AINA. Sillä kertaa asia kuitenkin unohtuu.
Noustakseen taas esiin kun Kotkan Sibelius-puistossa, samana kesänä, järjestetään mikä lie rock-tapahtuma jossa soittaa myös tämä mystinen Omnipotenssi. Suunnistan paikalle todetakseni, että oikea nimi onkin Omnium Gatherum. Jo on kumma nimi. Siis "sillisalaatti", tuumaan ja tuskailen sitä, että bändi soittaa viimeisenä. Tietenkin. No, jaksan silti ahteri ja mieli puuduksissa (kiitos paikallisten superbändien) istua viimeminuuteille asti.
Katson keikan ja olen vakuuttunut. Nuoret finninaamat hölmöissä Deicide-paidoissaan skulaavat kuin enkelit. Erityisesti huomiota kiinnittävät taidoillaan soolokitaristi ja rytmikitaristi, jolla on melko huono ryhti. Selkä suoraksi, ajattelen. Musiikkinsa on kuitenkin niin suoraselkäistä ja tarttuvaa, että huomaan rallattelevani Gates-kappaletta matkalla kotiin. Tulen rallattelemaan sitä myös useasti myöhemmin. Mainittakoon, että laitan "levy-yhtiöönsä" kirjallista, suitsuttavaa, palautetta sähköpostin muodossa, mutta nämä eivät viitsi edes vastata. Juntit!

Sanomattakin siis selvää, että hankin yhtyeen self titled debyyttilevyn himaan kuunneltavaksi. Jälki ei ihan vakuuta, soundit ovat kerrassaan karmeat. Biisit tulevat kuitenkin sen verran selviksi, että yhtyeen linja selkiää kertaheitolla. Gates soi päässäni edelleen…unohtamatta toista helmeä, Crater Lakea. Musiikista jää silti ns. hyvä maku suuhun, joka pitää kiinnostustani yhtyeeseen yllä.
Aikaa kuluu ja Gardens, temples…this hell ilmestyy. Hommaan sen sutena. Soundit ovat huomattavasti parantuneet, musiikki ei ole muuttunut. Hyvä. Suosikkipiisikseni kohoaa "Garden of fallen jesters." Pitääköhän muuten paikkansa, mutta Children of Bodomin uusi single "You better off dead" sisältää väliosassaan täsmälleen samanlaisen riffin ja rytmilliset ratkaisut kuin "Garden". Kutsun tätä yhteensattumaa rosvoukseksi, josta suuressa maailmassa käytäisiin jo oikeutta (vrt. Lambada). No, Bodom ei ole Sodom joten jääköön omaan arvoonsa.
Kuuntelen Gardensia ja sekkailen mahdollisia keikkatilaisuuksia. No näitähän on, mutta ikäväkseni missaan niistä suurimman osan. Mainittakoon Kotkan Nuokkarin keikka -98, johon setä ehti ja jossa setä oli tasan kaksi kertaa vanhempi kuin muu yleisö. Siellä sitä hiippailtiin suunnilleen sukkasillaan…No, okei, kenkiä ei tarvinnut jättää narikkaan, mutta takki kylläkin. Hiihtele siinä sitten blazeri päällä siellä teinien seassa. Moderniin klubi- ja ravintolakulttuuriin tottuneena täytyy myöntää, että konsepti oli hieman…hmm…outo. Ei sen puoleen, lapsetkin tarvitsevat huvipaikkansa. Ja OG:n esitys oli jälleen mieleenpainuva.
Tämän jälkeen bongaan yhtyeen vielä kaksi kertaa, Karhulan Sam's Pubissa. Ensimmäinen näistä tehdään vielä Olli Lappalaisen heiluessa mikrofonin varressa. Todistan ensi kertaa rumpali Jarmo Pikan soittoa. Olen edelleen vakuuttunut. Viimeisenä biisinä heitetty Deathin "Symbolic" aiheuttaa hurmoksellisia ajatuskulkuja. Tämä tapahtuu muistaakseni loppusyksystä 2000.
Ja nyt olemme siis vuodessa 2002. Keväällä OG on taas kerran esiintynyt Sam's Pubissa uuden laulajansa, Antti Filpun kera. Mukana on myös uusi kosketinsoittaja, Mikko Pennanen. Soitto tekee edelleenkin suuren vaikutuksen, mutta uusi laulaja ei tunnu toimivan. Esityksessä on ilmaa ja hiven tekotaiteellisuutta. Allekirjoittaneeseen vaikuttaa myös se, että Olli Lappalaiselta jäi melko suuret saappaat täytettäväksi. Mieshän oli mitä mainioin lavapersoona. Jään siis kaipaamaan auktoriteettia, jota keulamiehen tulisi omata (esim. Total Devastationin Jaaccohan on hallitsevuudessaan tästä hyvä esimerkki).
Keikasta jää silti hyvä mieli. Vaikkakin yleistunnelmaa latistaa eturivin vanhojen ukkojen epäasiallinen kommentointi ja huonot vitsit. Tulee aina kännissä mölyttyä…pojat eivät silti ole pahoillaan. Hyvä. Katson vielä aiheelliseksi antaa rytmikitaristille yleispsykologisen löylytyksen ja ohjeet soittoasioiden priorisoimiseen. Harri ei hermostu vaikka allekirjoittanut esiintyykin kolmen promillen tukevassa humalassa ja itsevarmuus on sitä luokkaa. Nooh, huumoriahan se, vaikkakin totuuspohjaista. Loppuillasta keskitymme Pig Destroyerin arvioimiseen ts. allekirjoittanut sauhuaa hullun lailla ja Harri se vaan naureskelee. Hommaa kuitenkin levyn! Jota voin muuten suositella teistä jokaiselle. Jos nyt hempeä grindcore putoaa. Levyn nimi siis "Prowler in the yard." Kuuntele ja hämmästy
Noh, Pig Destroyerin sijaan on keskityttävä taas aiheeseen, OG:n uuteen minilevyyn Steal the light. Olen entistä vakuuttuneempi yhtyeen kyvyistä. Jopa hämmästynyt, sanoisinko. Musiikki noudattelee edelleen omakustanteiden lanseeraamaa linjaa, mutta lisäelementtejä on tullut mukaan huikaiseva määrä.
Kappaleethan ovat perusrakenteeltaan melko yksinkertaisia, jopa perinteisiä. Perinteistä taas ei ole mitä suurin nyanssitaju, jota orkesteri osoittaa. Nyanssien ymmärtämisen tukena on selkeästi havaittavissa myös ymmärrys harmoniikalle, tavalle käsitellä soinnutuksia. Kappaleet synnyttävät selkeitä mielikuvia ja tuntemuksia, joista ehkä selkeimpänä puhdas haikeus. Varsinkin Son's thoughts tuo mieleeni elokuvanomaisia välähdyksiä. Rakkaustarinan joka päättyy suruun. Levyn maalaama maisema on muutenkin hyvin kaunis ja melankolinen. Jopa romanttinen.
Romanttisuudessaan ehkä vertoja vetävä albumi on Type O' Negativen "October rust", joka eroaa Steal the lightista pääosin raskaudellaan. Vastapainona Type O' Negativen umpilumessa kahlaamiselle mainittakoon OG:n pääskysenkepeä ja ripeäotteinen ilmaisu joka kuitenkin pystyy luomaan syviä tunnelmia. Ja erään, erittäin selkeän kuvan: vilkaisepa Cannibal Corpsen "Bleeding"-albumin sisäkantta. Kuvaa, jossa ruumis nouseekaltaistensa joukosta iäisyyteen. Totta: iäisyyteen. Näen nimittäin kuvassa suuret määrät toivoa. Tätä samaa toivoa on löydettävissä Steal the lightilta.
Yksinkertaisia sointukulkuja siis yleensä pystytään käsittelemään kahdella tapaa. Arvannettekin mitkä nämä vaihtoehdot ovat. OG tekee sen sillä ensin mieleen tulevalla tavalla, hyvin. Sointu-rakenteiden päälle pystytään punomaan tiivis vivahteiden verkko. Tämä elävöittää lopputulosta ja tekee siitä erittäin mielenkiintoisen. Mainittakoon, että olen nyt kuunnellut levyn 6 kertaa. Olen edelleen nälkäinen, koko totuus ei vieläkään ole selvillä. Havaintoja on yhä luvassa. Paljon.
Tekstit erottuvat massasta omalaatuisuudellaan. Filppu on onnistunut taikomaan moniulotteisen ilmapiirin, joka (tunnustettakoon) tosin vieläkään ei ole täysin auennutallekirjoittaneelle. Tämä taas ei ole mikään paha juttu. Moniulotteisuus pitää huolen siitä, että mielenkiinto teksteihin säilyy. Tunnustan myös heikon yleissivistykseni tason: kuka lienee Giordano Bruno? Lyriikat eivät siis ole mitään standardimetallisanastoa. Tämä taas sopii erinomaisesti musiikilliseen antiin. OG ei ole standardiyhtye, vaan oma jäljittelemätön itsensä.
No myönnyttäköön kuitenkin vertailuille, koska se tuntuu olevan yleinen tapa. Ainoa vertailukohta, joka minulle koskaan on tästä musiikista tullut mieleen, on Gates of Ishtar. Tämä mielikuvakin syntyi ns. perse edeltä puuhun metodilla: kuullessani Gates of Ishtaria ensimmäisen kerran, ajattelin oitis sen kuulostavan OG:lta. Tärkeää: ei siis päinvastoin! Ja jos hieman jatketaan vertailujen parissa, voitaneen todeta, että samoillavesillä ollaan In Flamesin ja Dark Tranquilityn kanssa. Tätä ei kuitenkaan tule pitää itseisarvona, onpahan vaan löyhä viittaus…jos nyt joku ei satu jo tietämään. Perselinnun lukijat varmaankin tietävät…

Maestro Markus Vanhala on siis master mind kappaleiden takana. Hän ei ainoastaan ole lempikitaristini, vaan taitava säveltäjä jolla on selkeä visio suunnasta, johon hän orkesteriaan luotsaa. Silti: on itsestään selvää ja onni, että Markuksen taustalle on valikoitunut erittäin laadukas ja herkin käsin soittava kokoonpano. Uskon, että ilman näin ilmaisukykyistä ryhmää kappaleet eivät eläisi kuten ne nyt elävät.
Ja mitä sanoinkaan aiemmin Antti Filpun lavapersoonasta? Pyörrän puheeni tässä ja nyt. Levyllä Antti lunastaa paikkansa orkesterin solistina puhtaalla suorituksella. Olin hyvinpositiivisesti yllättynyt kuunneltuani lauluraitaa ensimmäisen kerran. Äänessä on juuri sopiva määrä kohtalokkuutta ja epätoivoa sinetöimään kappaleiden luomat tunnelmat.
Lienee selvää? Kaivaudun nyt nojatuoliini, laitan Son's thoughtsin (se intro!) soimaan, vajoan ranskalaiseen kaupunkimaisemaan ja ajattelen rakastavaisia jotka eivät koskaan saaneet toisiaan (ja tämä ei ole tulkinta tekstistä vaan puhdas musiikillinen visio!). Seuraavaksi pyöräytän Ammon. Sen jälkeen pyöräytän koko levyn. Uudelleen ja uudelleen…kunnes pitkäsoitto on käsissäni. Toivon sen tapahtuvan pian, näin fanina.
